Vaccines are very necessary, but not enough!!

With the spread of vaccination campaigns against the Corona virus, In Western Europe in early 2021, many European leaders saw vaccines as their direct way out of the crisis and out of the epidemic.

And press conferences took an almost festive tone, as European presidents, prime ministers, and advisers announced road maps away from the restrictions of Corona, praising the rates of vaccination in their countries.

Indulgence in preventive measures

But those countries soon discovered that the relatively high vaccination rates were not enough to stop the spread of Corona, as the number of injuries recorded in Germany and Austria increased in recent weeks, due to the leniency in preventive measures.

"The vaccine provides significant protection from severe illness or death," Charles Bangham, professor of immunology and co-director of the Institute of Infections at Imperial College London, told CNN.

He also added, "However, we know that the delta mutant transmits infection very quickly," noting that "this matter was accompanied by changes in society and behavior, as it ignored adherence to preventive measures that had already declined in many countries."

Infection

He pointed out that high vaccination rates are not enough, when talking about reducing transmission.

In turn, Ralph Reingis, professor of epidemiology and public health monitoring at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany, confirmed that “vaccination helps,” but at the same time stressed that “the stone is the basis for the mechanism of eliminating the virus, but it will not be strong enough alone.” .

For his part, Sam McConkey, Head of the Department of International Health and Tropical Medicine at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dublin, explained, “We are seeing an epidemic among the unvaccinated people, who are about 10% of the population over the age of 12, as it is is expected".

The high infection rate has frustrated most leaders across Europe, with the increased risk of foci from unvaccinated people.

Irish Deputy Prime Minister Leo Varadkar told CNN that unprotected people "cause a lot of problems," noting that Ireland "will not impose restrictions now" if everyone receives the vaccine.

Immunodeficiency in the foreground

The countries of the European continent were the first to bring vaccines and start giving them to citizens in the first months of 2021, but these countries are facing a gradual decline in immunity.

This is what was shown by two studies published last month, after they revealed that the immune protection provided by the two doses of the Corona vaccine from the “Pfizer” company begins to decline after two months or more, although protection from severe diseases, hospitalization, and death is still strong. Studies that included the “Moderna” and “AstraZeneca” vaccines, also used in Europe, showed similar results.

On the other hand, Tobias Kurth, Professor of Public Health and Epidemiology and Director of the Institute of Public Health at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin, said that “immunity is one of the reasons for the slow increase in cases of hospitalization among immunized people, especially among the elderly, especially among the elderly, who were the first target group for vaccination.”

He pointed out that "the good news is that the antibodies and cells resulting from the vaccine appear to be in very good condition, despite a slight decrease in their concentration," noting that this protects the immunized people, but the problem lies in the inability to control the transmission of infection to others, which may contribute to infection. Increasing the rate of injuries.

60% of the global burden

Experts insist that vaccines alone cannot reduce the spread of an epidemic in a country.

David Heyman, former Executive Director of the Infectious Diseases Group at the World Health Organization and a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said that “the vaccine controls the number of deaths, but what we are witnessing today is that this virus has become an inherent epidemic, and has achieved a wider spread in some countries due to a decline in the number of deaths.” Strict controls.

It is noteworthy that the rate of corona infections increased last month in Europe, where infected people represent 60% of the global burden of injuries, according to Johns Hopkins University.
