The best foods to enhance memory
The human body needs antioxidants to protect brain cells from harmful free radicals, says Dietitian Arushi Gupta, Assistant Dietitian at Dayanand Medical College and Ludhiana Hospital in India. Important nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, flavonoids and vitamin E are beneficial for brain health, so the following can be taken to enhance memory:
eggs
Vitamin D deficiency can lead to impaired cognitive skills, thus it is important to maintain those levels by eating eggs rich in Vitamin D. The brain-friendly nutrients are also found in the yolk, so be sure to eat the yolk especially for breakfast.
chamomile tea
Chamomile tea can improve cognitive function and lack of sleep. It can also reduce stress and enhance focus and memory. It is one of the best teas for brain health and for boosting energy.
Almonds
Almonds are well known for their unique memory-improving benefit in humans. The importance of almonds for brain function is due to its richness in vitamin E.
avocado
Avocados are one of the most important sources of healthy unsaturated fats that have been shown to support the brain and its function. It helps lower blood pressure, thus preventing cognitive damage. Avocados also contain many other essential nutrients that are important for the brain and overall health.
Turmeric
According to research, the compound curcumin present in turmeric helps improve memory and mood in adults. Besides turmeric, walnuts, garlic and green tea can also be included in the diet.
Foods that affect memory
Dr. Arushi says that there are certain foods and drinks that are not a good choice for memory, ability to focus, and overall brain health as follows:
sugary drinks
Similar to the effect of processed foods, sugary drinks can cause weight gain without providing essential nutrients and beneficial calories. Excess sugar can damage memory and brain functions. In fact, sugary drinks are also linked to Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Sugary drinks such as soda, energy drinks, and fruit juices should be avoided to enhance memory and keep the brain healthy.
Processed foods
Many processed foods, including chips, some types of meat and sweets, should be listed as harmful food products that fill the stomach without benefiting the body and harm its organs. Consuming a lot of processed foods can lead to weight gain as well as damage to brain tissue. Therefore, experts advise eating as little processed foods as possible to prevent memory damage.
soy sauce
Eating just a tablespoon of soy sauce with sushi may not be a big concern, but eating large amounts daily does not benefit the health of the body in general and specifically affects the functioning of the brain, thus impairing long-term memory and concentration.
the salt
It is recommended to eat as much salt as it is recommended globally, and it should not be excessive because it is the enemy of memory. According to a scientific study, it was found that eating a lot of foods full of salt and sodium such as soy sauce can impede blood flow to the brain affecting skills and memory. High salt intake can also lead to an electrolyte imbalance and dehydration, which is not beneficial for many brain functions.
ice cream
According to several studies, it has been proven that saturated fats and foods rich in sugar can have a negative impact on cognitive skills and verbal memory. While it is good to enjoy ice cream from time to time, experts advise to choose harmless alternatives such as Greek yogurt with pieces of fresh fruit, preferably strawberries, grapes or berries because they are good for health and safety.
