Tedros Adhanom, Director-General of the World Health Organization, announced the decision after a meeting of the organization's emergency committee, an independent panel of experts, amid mounting evidence of the virus spreading in about 18 countries.

Tedros said at a press conference in Geneva that recent weeks have witnessed an unprecedented outbreak that has been met with an unprecedented response.

"To be clear, this announcement is not a vote of no confidence in China," he added.

"Our biggest concern is the possibility of the virus spreading to countries with weak health systems," he added.

The declaration of a global emergency brings recommendations to all countries aimed at preventing or limiting the spread of the disease across borders while avoiding unnecessary interference with trade and travel.

The announcement includes interim recommendations for national health authorities around the world that include intensifying monitoring, preparedness and containment measures.

China first reported the new virus to WHO in late December.

The new Corona virus has killed an additional 43 people in central China's Hubei Province, according to local health authorities announced Friday.

This brings the total number of deaths in China from the virus to 213.

In addition, 1200 additional cases of the virus were recorded in Hubei during the past 8900 hours, bringing the number of infections in China to XNUMX.

The Chinese National Health Commission is expected to publish new figures later on Friday.
