Stay tuned for the passage of a giant planet near Earth Thursday, May 27

NASA revealed that an asteroid larger than the Statue of Liberty is traveling through the galaxy at a speed of 61,155 km per hour, and it will pass near Earth on Thursday.

And according to what was reported in the British newspaper, the Daily Star, the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies confirmed the existence of the space rock via its website. According to the European Space Agency, the asteroid was only discovered on May 3.

The asteroid, named 2021 JF1, is approaching through the galaxy at 38,000 miles per hour (61,155 kilometers per hour), according to NASA's NEO Earth Close list of approaches.

NASA says that the estimated diameter of the 2021 JF1 ranges between 95 and 210 meters, which makes it likely larger than the Statue of Liberty in New York, which is 93 meters high.

The giant space rock will pass about 3.2 million miles (5.1 million km) from Earth at 1.11 am on Thursday, May 27, according to NASA data.

This may seem far away, but it is relatively close from a space perspective, and NASA considers anything that passes within 120 million miles (193 million km) of our planet to be near-Earth objects.

According to NASA, the 2021 JF1 could also pass close to Earth on November 5 next year.

It was classified as the "Apollo" asteroid, which is known to be one of the most dangerous types of asteroids.

And “Apollo” asteroids are those that have a path that intersects with the Earth’s orbit, unlike “Amor” asteroids that do not intersect with it.

It is noteworthy that 2021 JF1 is the largest asteroid to pass through Earth this week, but it is not the only one, being one of 4 space rocks that is scheduled to avoid Earth with difficulty on Thursday alone, which is 2021 KP, which has a diameter of 22 meters, and it will pass at a distance of 380,361 miles before 2021KR , 11 meters in diameter, and it will pass at 2.8 million miles, and 2021JX2, with a diameter of 15 meters, and it will pass at a distance of 1.4 million miles.

NASA's team of astronomers is currently tracking about 2000 asteroids, comets and other things that can fly near Earth.

According to NASA, NEO is also a term used to describe “comets and asteroids that have been pushed by the gravity of nearby planets into orbits that allow them to enter the vicinity of the Earth.”

The Earth has not seen an asteroid of such a horrific scale since the space rock that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.

Most asteroids will not come into contact with Earth's atmosphere, but in rare cases, giant space rocks can cause problems for weather systems.
