Scientists believe that their discovery could provide a target for the development of a weight-loss drug that would discourage the desire to continue eating fatty foods, without interfering with the necessary regular eating habits.

The study shows that emotions, or at least the emotional centers in our brains, drive us to eat food, which has not been plentiful throughout the ages, leading to the development of a system in the brain that tells us to get as much food as possible, as long as we can.

Our metabolic systems have the advantage of converting the fats we eat into energy, so (from an evolutionary point of view) a high-fat diet is a good idea.

The study concluded that there are two ways of eating: symmetric eating for the purpose of living, and consistent eating for the purpose of pleasure.

More recently, scientists have shifted their focus to eating pleasure, and discovered a protein called neoseptin, which appears more active when mice and humans alike eat delicious, rich food, which keeps us doing so.

So, a drug that blocks this protein can limit our overeating cravings as well.

It should be noted that scientists have studied the amygdala for a long time, and linked it to pain, anxiety and fear, but recent results confirm that it is linked to other things as well, such as regulating metabolic eating.
