Who is Sultan Qaboos?
Sultan Qaboos bin Said is the eighth Sultan of Oman in the direct line of the Al Busaid family, which was founded by Imam Ahmed bin Said in 1741.
Sultan Qaboos was born on the eighteenth of November 1940 in the city of Salalah in the Dhofar Governorate. He began his first education in Oman and then joined the British Royal Military Academy “Sandhurst” in 1960, from which he graduated two years later.
Sultan Qaboos joined one of the British infantry battalions operating at the time in West Germany, where he spent 6 months as a trainee in the art of leadership.
After completing military sciences within the unit, he joined the study of local government systems and completed specialized courses in administration affairs.
In 1964 he returned to Oman and studied the sciences of Islamic law and the civilization and history of the Sultanate in depth.


“Big fixes”
Sultan Qaboos assumed the reins of the rule of Oman on July 23, 1970, and since that time has worked to establish major reforms in various political, economic, military, social and cultural fields.

Sultan Qaboos also received, during his busy political career, many Arab and international honors, including the International Peace Prize by 33 American universities, research centers and organizations in 1998, the Peace Prize by the Russian International Society in 2007, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Prize for International Understanding from India in same year.
Among the decorations that Sultan Qaboos received were the King Abdul Aziz Al Saud Medal in 1971, and the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Medal in Kuwait 2009.
Sultan Qaboos was known for his love of equestrianism, and he held many equestrian festivals and camel competitions, and his interest in protecting the Omani environment in its various diversity, which was evidenced by the establishment of the Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Preservation in 1989, which is awarded by UNESCO every two years.
