How to limit Apple's access to your photos?

Beginning with the release of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, Apple is implementing a new Child Protection Policy by checking the photos you upload to your iCloud account for any child pornography and reporting it to law enforcement.

According to Apple, there is no real checking of your iCloud photos. Apple dedicates to your image what is called neural image segmentation. It's a string of numbers that identifies your photo and then compares it to the hash in the CSAM database, and then saves this process in what Apple calls a security coupon next to the photo.

The technique is analyzed based on this segmentation. And if the image security slip meets the criteria and contains CSAM image matches. In this case, your iCloud account is flagged by the system so that human reviewers can step in to see if there are illegal photos and report the photos and the account at the same time.

How to stop Apple from checking your iCloud photos

Apple scans photos when they are uploaded to your iCloud account, and does not scan photos that are sent in messaging applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, or others.

However, if you don't want Apple to permanently check your photos, your only option is to disable the iCloud photo service on your device.
To do this, follow these steps:
• Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
• Click on your name at the top, then select the iCloud option.
• Select the photo option.
• Toggle the button next to iCloud Photos to Off.
• In the pop-up window that appears, select the option to download photos and videos to download the photos stored in your account to your device.
• You can also use the service's website to download all the images to your computer.

After you do this, your device stops uploading new photos to your account. This results in Apple not scanning any of your photos anymore.
