What are the benefits of sugar cane and when it is forbidden to eat it?

Sugarcane juice is a popular drink that helps cool the body and strengthen the immune system, but experts advise against consuming it daily, according to what was published by the Vietnamese “VN Express” website.

The drink provides natural fructose, which boosts energy and reduces feelings of fatigue, especially on hot days. It also contains many vitamins and minerals, and is rich in antioxidants, proteins and soluble fiber.

Double the daily ration for women

But Dr Bui Dak Sang, a professor at the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, says cane juice should not be consumed on a daily basis. Dr. Sang adds that the average person can gain weight if they drink a lot of sugarcane juice. An 240-ounce cup provides an average of about 183 calories and 50 grams of sugar, which equals 12 teaspoons of sugar, which is higher than the recommended daily amount of 9 teaspoons for men and 6 teaspoons for women.

Cases that are prohibited from taking juice

So, people, who are diagnosed with diabetes, dyslipidemia or gout, should not drink much sugarcane juice. Pregnant women, those at risk of gestational diabetes, the elderly, children under 4 years of age, and people using nutritional supplements or blood-thinning medications should not drink sugarcane juice.

2 cups per week

Dr. Sang says that consuming only one or two cups of sugarcane juice per week is best, depending on the health status of the person, warning that those who consume unhealthy sugarcane juice are at risk of infection and food poisoning.

Thus, people with a weak digestive system, who often suffer from indigestion or diarrhoea, are advised not to drink juice or very little of it.
